SURFIN’ BIRDS WIN 50+ CHAMPIONSHIP
After four months of sun, clouds, wind and rain the Glory Days Wood Bat 50+ Softball League finished their season with a familiar Champion, the Tombstone Saloon Surfin’ Birds. The Birds won their 3rd title in the six year history of the League with a 1-0 victory over the Northeast Collision Americans at J.P. Nicely Park in West Falls.
In a tremendous defensive struggle the Bird’s scored the only run in the 5th inning to gain the victory. Bob Bierk led off with and single and Mike Flemming followed with an infield hit. Coach Mark Brinkel hammered an RBI single to right field scoring Bierk for the only tally of the contest.
John Hulslander got the hill win tossing his 2nd shutout in 3 play-off games. It was the very first shutout in a 50+ Championship game history. Play-Off MVP Don Seider was great again on defense while Jim Bartram and Dave Vesneske came through with big plays to shut down the Americans.
Seven of the thirteen 2015 Birds are now 3 time Champs. They’ve won the 50+ Championship in 2010, 2013 and this season.
The hard luck Americans lost their 4th title game in 6 years. Three of the losses were by one run. Coach Ken Struck played a superb game at second base while Jeff Gianiodis made a spectacular over the head catch in left centerfield. Paul Falser made a shoestring catch in left field to stop a Bird’s rally. Bad luck followed the Americans when with the bases loaded in the 4th inning the Bird’s turned a very rare 3-2-3 double play to end the inning.
The 60+ Championship was postponed for one week due to unplayable diamond conditions.
